Reducing microenvironments promote incorporation of magnesium ions into authigenic carbonate forming at methane seeps: Constraints for dolomite formation

چکیده
In part composed of Mg calcite and dolomite with a nearly continuous spectrum MgCO3 contents, carbonates forming at marine methane seeps are ideal candidates to study the formation early diagenetic surface conditions. Laboratory experiments, modelling co-variation mineralogical geochemical attributes seep suggest that sulphide – locally released from sulphate-driven anaerobic oxidation drives catalytic seeps. Direct comparison concentration dissolved content carbonate could test this hypothesis. Although during precipitation cannot be determined, sedimentary fabrics probably had an effect on local concentration. Carbonates seabed Shenhu seepage area South China Sea reveal longitudinal, winding branched width 400 700 ?m, interpreted represent burrows piercing semi-consolidated sediment. The abandoned were infilled fine-grained sediment, which was subsequently cemented by microcrystalline calcite. degree cation ordering in burrow infills host sediment is similar, indicating virtually coeval formation. متن کاملBiodiversity on the Rocks: Macrofauna Inhabiting Authigenic Carbonate at Costa Rica Methane Seeps
Carbonate communities: The activity of anaerobic methane oxidizing microbes facilitates precipitation of vast quantities of authigenic carbonate at methane seeps. Here we demonstrate the significant role of carbonate rocks in promoting diversity by providing unique habitat and food resources for macrofaunal assemblages at seeps on the Costa Rica margin (400-1850 m). The attendant fauna is surpr...
متن کاملControls on authigenic carbonate precipitation at cold seeps along the convergent margin off Costa Rica
[1] Five sediment cores from cold seeps at the forearc off Costa Rica were used to explore the relationship between fluid advection, dissolved Ca concentrations in upward migrating fluids, and authigenic CaCO3 precipitation. A numerical transport‐reaction model was used to determine rates of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), CaCO3 precipitation, and benthic fluxes of solutes. Production of ...
متن کاملAnaerobic methane oxidation and the formation of dolomite
We examine the link between organic matter degradation, anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO), and sulfate depletion and explore how these processes potentially influence dolomitization. We determined rates and depths of AMO and dolomite formation for a variety of organic-rich sites along the west African Margin using data from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 175. Rates of AMO are calculated from ...
